Sage

Sage (Salvia officinalis) comes from the Mediterranean region. Currently, due to its valuable properties, it is cultivated in many countries around the world. It contains, among others, flavonoids, organic acids, essential oil, vitamins (including A, C, B) and minerals (magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, sodium and zinc). Thanks to its active substances, it has antiperspirant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic effects, regulating the digestive system and sugar levels in the body.

The properties of inhibiting excessive sweating, combined with antibacterial action, make sage often used in products reducing excessive sweating.

Additionally, sage is an excellent source of phytoestrogens, plant compounds that help the body replace the loss of natural estrogens. Phytoestrogens can soothe hot flashes, anxiety and irritability. They also help regulate circadian rhythms and have a positive effect on the nervous system, making it easier to stay calm, concentrate and memory processes, and they also have a positive effect on the skin, protecting cells from premature aging.

Common hop

Hops (Humulus lupulus) has been considered a medicinal plant since ancient times. This herb is known primarily for its calming and sleep-inducing properties. The calming effect attributed to it results from the presence of lupulin, which has the ability to inhibit the activity of the nervous system elements. Other valuable active substances that have an impact on improving the quality of sleep, present in hop cones, include: essential oil, isovaleric acid, tannins and bitter substances.

At the end of the 20th century, hop cones were found to contain phytoestrogens, which help to reduce the symptoms associated with menopause. Additionally, no side effects have been reported when used in appropriate doses.

Additionally, hops alleviate the symptoms of excessive sweating, irritability, reduce hot flashes and reduce anxiety.

Menopause

One of the stages of every woman's life is menopause, also known as menopause or climacteric. According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), menopause occurs when, without any other obvious physiological or disease cause and without clinical intervention, a woman has not had menstrual bleeding for an entire year. During this time, ovulation ceases and the production of hormones: estrogen and progesterone decreases. Menopause affects physical and mental well-being and often private and professional life. The discomforts of menopause in each woman can take on different intensity and manifest themselves in an individual way.

Although the onset of menopause is individual, it usually begins around the age of 50. There are a number of factors that can accelerate the onset of menopause, including: late motherhood or lack of offspring, genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases, leading an unhealthy and irregular lifestyle, using stimulants, and certain medications.

Menopause is preceded by perimenopause, a time when the hormonal functions of the ovaries gradually decrease, and eventually cease completely – menopause. As a result, a woman begins to experience many unpleasant symptoms that can make everyday functioning difficult: hot flashes, mood changes, general irritability, nervousness, or sleep problems. Postmenopause, on the other hand, is a time when the body adapts to the lack of sex hormones.

The following may help alleviate the symptoms of menopause:

  • A varied, well-balanced diet – during this time, the female body is more susceptible to rapid weight gain. It is worth eating regular meals with plenty of vegetables and fruits rich in fiber and natural estrogens (beans, pumpkin, soy, herbs such as sage and hops).
Phytoestrogens are among the most important ingredients of preparations that can improve the well-being of women during menopause. These are plant compounds with a structure similar to female sex hormones, which naturally help the body cope with the effects of reduced estrogen secretion by the ovaries.
  • Limiting stimulants (nicotine, alcohol, caffeine) – due to the slowing metabolism, it is increasingly difficult for the body to cope with toxic substances.
  • Regular physical activity – exercising even 30 minutes a day improves well-being, allows you to burn extra calories, strengthens muscles and bones, which are more susceptible to fractures and cracks due to lower estrogen production. Regular exercise provides protection against circulatory system diseases, atherosclerosis and diabetes, which are much more common in women during menopause.
  • Restful sleep – this is often disrupted by hot flashes and irritability. Yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises can help with falling asleep.

Herbal Supplements for Menopause

Many plants have properties that can alleviate unpleasant symptoms and improve the quality of life.

It is worth using herbs for menopause that:

  • contain phytoestrogens,
  • help relieve excessive sweating,
  • have a beneficial effect on the digestive system,
  • have a calming and soothing effect,
  • have a sleep-facilitating effect.

Using herbs for menopause, relaxation methods, meditation, acupuncture and massages have a positive effect on the well-being and health of women going through the menopause stage. Natural methods will not always replace hormone therapy in 100%, and the decision to include it should be left to the doctor.

It is important to remember that herbs for menopause can cause side effects, and the reaction to them is due to the individual characteristics of the body. It is worth consulting a doctor before introducing them to your daily diet, especially when taking any medications, as they can interact with herbs, posing a threat to health or even life.
