Sweet orange peel

Medicinal and nutritional properties of oranges (Citrus sinensis) were first appreciated by the Chinese. In Europe, its health-promoting effects have been known only since the 16th century. The fruit contains many vitamins and nutrients. On the other hand, the peel can be used to obtain an essential oil rich in the ingredient responsible for the characteristic smell of these fruits – limonene. Clinical studies have shown that limonene has relaxing, calming and sleep-improving properties.

Sweet orange peel powder acts directly on the symptoms caused by stress, therefore it helps to restore the body's balance, improving the quality of sleep, cognitive functions, reducing irritability and the feeling of stress.

Melisa

Lemon balm

Melissa (Melissa officinalis) was used in ancient times, and today it is cultivated almost all over the world. In the 16th century, the Swiss physician Paracelsus recommended it as a remedy for a weakened body, fading youth, a tired mind and frayed nerves.

The active substances contained in lemon balm extract have a sleep-inducing, calming and soothing effect, which helps to relax and improve the quality of sleep. Lemon balm is also helpful in states of constant fatigue, nervous agitation and general irritability. It brings relief to people living in a hurry, leading an intense life full of stress and nervousness.

Lemon balm calms the central nervous system, inhibits excessive stimulation, limits the impact of stressors and helps the body return to a state of balance. It also regulates heart rhythm, relaxes tense muscles, reduces anxiety and restores well-being.

Chmiel

Common hop

Hops (Humulus lupulus) was already used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, who considered it a miraculous remedy for insomnia and soothing strained nerves.

Lupulin, obtained from hop cones, contains a number of compounds that inhibit the reaching of stimuli to the central nervous system and reduce the activity of the cerebral cortex. Hence the intense calming, tension-reducing, calming, soothing and relaxing effects of this plant.

Hops should be used primarily by people who have various types of sleep problems, as well as by busy people who find it difficult to calm down and relax.

The essential oil contained in lavender has a positive effect on the central nervous system. It reduces its excessive activity, relieves emotional tension, relaxes and relieves, and reduces the effects of fatigue, which has a positive effect on improving the quality and length of sleep.

The traditional use of lavender in states of nervous tension, anxiety and insomnia has been confirmed by numerous studies.

Sleep

Sleep is a basic physiological need of our body. During sleep, a number of regenerative and repair processes occur, which are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Quality sleep optimizes basically every system of the body, bringing extremely important benefits to the neurological, cardiovascular, immune and hormonal systems. It has been shown that several nights with insufficient hours of sleep cause problems with concentration and memory, deterioration of physical and mental condition, fatigue and a significant decrease in immunity. It is currently estimated that about 1/3 of adults have sleep problems, which cause lack of regeneration and fatigue.

Sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorders or interrupted sleep can lead to increased morbidity and contribute to the development of new diseases or exacerbate existing health disorders, often including mental health problems.

Healthy and uninterrupted sleep ensures proper functioning during the day. Studies show that improper sleep negatively affects the ability to learn and neurobehavioral functions. To better understand the role of sleep in everyday life, it is necessary to focus on improving its quality and observing the changes that occur as a result. In order to improve the quality of sleep, it is worth reaching for, for example, organic, plant-based dietary supplements for sleep. Various factors (e.g. stress, fast pace of life) can disrupt sleep, so it is also worth learning the basic rules of sleep hygiene and following them regularly:

  • Proper diet – a healthy diet provides all the necessary nutrients and minimizes the occurrence of sleep disorders. Important: avoid a large dinner and large amounts of fluids before bed.
  • We should eat our last meal 2-3 hours before bed.
  • Avoid stimulants – caffeine, alcohol and nicotine have stimulating effects.
  • Regular physical activity – physical activity during the day makes us feel tired in the evening and sleep better. Movement also reduces stress, which also improves the quality of sleep. However, it is important not to exercise late in the evening and immediately before going to bed. Then it is best to do a relaxing yoga session or breathing exercises.
  • Reduce stress – physical activity and relaxation exercises can help.
  • Afternoon naps are not a good solution – they disrupt the regularity and consistency of waking up and going to sleep.
  • Suitable sleeping conditions include a well-darkened room, a comfortable bed, a fitted mattress, a well-ventilated room and the right temperature.
  • Relaxation before bed – shortens the time it takes to fall asleep. Do not engage in stimulating activities an hour before bed.
  • Write down things to do – If you can’t sleep because you’re constantly thinking about something, write it down. Write down the things you need to remember the next day.
  • Light – do not turn on the light when you wake up, do not use screens: TV or phone before going to bed.

In periodic states of nervous tension, anxiety and difficulty falling asleep, herbs for sleep have been helpful for centuries. It is worth reaching for herbs that:

  • support peaceful and physiological sleep,
  • calm down the activity of the nervous system,
  • reduce nervous tension,
  • reduce nervous hyperexcitability,
  • make it easier to fall asleep,
  • have a positive effect on the length and quality of sleep,
  • relax and unwind the muscles,
  • reduce the effects of fatigue,
  • support relaxation,
  • support well-being,
  • reduce the feeling of stress and alleviate its symptoms,
  • inhibit excessive stimulation of the body.

It is important to remember that herbs for sleep can cause side effects, and the reaction to them is due to the individual characteristics of the body. It is worth consulting a doctor before introducing them to your daily diet, especially when taking any medications, as they can interact with herbs, posing a threat to health or even life.
