Hawthorn single-seeded and double-seeded

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna, C.leavigata) is one of the oldest pharmaceutical plants in Western culture. The main components of hawthorn are flavonoids and related proanthocyanidins, including rutin, hyperoside, vitexin, and rhamnoside.

Many studies have shown that the active substances contained in hawthorn act directly on the heart muscle, strengthening the force of contraction, reducing its frequency. This results in longer breaks between contractions and better rest of the heart. Hawthorn also lowers blood pressure. Hawthorn extracts also have a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system.

Common motherwort

Common motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is a plant that has been used for centuries for its cardiotonic properties. It contains a number of valuable active ingredients such as: flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, iridoids, alkaloids, organic acids, sitosterols, anthocyanins, resinous substances, essential oils, mineral salts. Thanks to them, motherwort preparations have properties that stabilize the heart rhythm in angina pectoris, cardiovascular neuroses and the initial stages of hypertension.

Motherwort affects the heart through the nervous system. It has a relaxing and calming effect on the central nervous system, weakens the strength of stimuli transmitted to the heart. It also has a strengthening effect on the heart, and thus improves circulation.

Melisa

Lemon balm

Medicinal properties of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) was first presented in the 1st century AD in the work De Materia Medica. The biological activity of lemon balm is due to the polyphenols it contains (mainly rosmarinic acid), triterpenes, including oleanane and its derivatives, ursolic acid and tannins, as well as proanthocyanidins, γ-tocopherol and ascorbic acid.

Lemon balm as a raw material with a calming and soothing effect is used in states of general nervous agitation and in related heart rhythm disorders and functional disorders of the digestive tract. It also works well in cases of insomnia, anxiety and exhaustion from excessive mental work.

Common nettle

The healing potential of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) was described in ancient times, including by Hippocrates. Common nettle is a valuable source of biologically active substances, which is why it has been used for centuries to support the human body. It is characterized by a high content of vitamins A, C and K, as well as several B vitamins, minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium, and other organic compounds such as amino acids, polyphenols, carotenoids. Many of these nutrients, acting as antioxidants, help protect cells from damage by free radicals. Common nettle, through its strong antioxidant effect, increases the heart's tolerance to ischemic destruction.

In vitro and in vivo studies have shown a beneficial effect of nettle on selected cardiovascular risk factors, as well as on blood pressure. This is associated with the stimulation of nitric oxide production, which acts as a vasodilator. Additionally, nettle has compounds that can act as calcium channel blockers, which relax the heart by reducing the force of contractions.

Black Elderberry

In folk medicine, elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has been used for centuries due to its rich composition. It contains substances with high biological activity, primarily polyphenols, mainly anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids and proanthocyanidins, as well as terpenes and lectins.

The results of many studies indicate a beneficial effect of black elderberry components on blood pressure, reduction of oxidative stress, increased activity of antioxidant enzymes in blood plasma, including glutathione, and lowering uric acid levels. Increased uric acid levels correlate with increased blood pressure and negative effects on heart health. Therefore, the active ingredients contained in black elderberry may indirectly lower blood pressure.

Heart

The heart is the most important muscle in our body. It pumps blood, which carries oxygen and nutrients to all tissues, while also taking away waste products and transporting them to appropriate places for removal from the body.

Heart and blood vessel diseases affect an increasing number of people. According to WHO, they are one of the most common diseases of civilization and the leading cause of premature death. Alarming data indicate that the average age of people who have experienced cardiovascular incidents has drastically decreased.

The main factors responsible for cardiovascular diseases are: fast pace of life, excessive stress, obesity, stimulants and poor diet. That is why it is worth introducing healthy habits into life. Herbal, ecological dietary supplements for the heart can also be helpful.

How to keep your heart healthy?

  • Remember about a healthy diet - eat healthy fats, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated, while avoiding trans fats, which are added to highly processed foods and increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. Also try to add fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and vitamins to your diet. Stock up on plant-based dietary supplements that support heart function.
  • Make sure you exercise regularly – move throughout the day, try to take at least 250 steps every hour. Sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis and promotes overweight and obesity.
  • Remember to get enough sleep – at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted rest at night.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene – bacteria involved in the development of tooth decay can enter the bloodstream and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Avoid smoking (including passive smoking) and other stimulants – inhaling tobacco smoke contributes to approximately 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease and over 7,000 deaths from lung cancer each year.
  • Get tested prophylactically – early detection of the disease increases the chance of successful treatment.

Herbs that support the heart

Compared to synthetic ingredients, herbs and natural heart supplements act more subtly on the body, which is why they are gaining popularity and are increasingly used to alleviate minor problems related to the functioning of the circulatory system. Some herbs can support the heart in the case of its weakening in the elderly, as well as in arrhythmia.

To support the heart and circulatory system, it is worth reaching for herbs that:

  • have been proven to work in scientific literature,
  • they act cardiotonic, i.e. they have properties that stabilize the heart rhythm,
  • improve the strength of heart muscle contraction,
  • improve energy metabolism of the heart muscle,
  • improve peripheral circulation,
  • have a relaxing and calming effect on the central nervous system,
  • weaken the strength of the impulses transmitted to the heart,
  • they have a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of blood vessels, coronary and cerebral vessels, thus lowering blood pressure,
  • they reduce blood pressure fluctuations with a tendency to lower it,
  • They have a strong antioxidant effect by counteracting oxidative stress and having a beneficial effect on blood pressure.

However, herbs and heart supplements can only be used as a supportive therapy to normal treatment. It is important to remember that every circulatory system disease should be treated by a specialist - cardiologist. Any natural remedies that we take or plan to take should be report to doctor due to the necessity exclusion of adverse side effects resulting from their reactions with normal medications.

It is important to remember that herbs that support the heart can cause side effects, and the reaction to them is due to the individual characteristics of the body. It is worth consulting a doctor before introducing them to your daily diet, especially when taking any medications, as they can interact with herbs, posing a threat to health or even life.
