Cranberries

The oldest scientific reports on the use of medicinal properties of cranberry juice (Vaccinium macrocarpon) date back to 1683.
Cranberry fruit is a valuable source of vitamins A, C and E, polyphenols, lutein and beta-carotene. It also contains macronutrients such as potassium, sodium and selenium. Bioactive phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties can protect the body from free radicals, and can also reduce the risk of civilization diseases and prevent inflammation in the body.
Several mechanisms have been suggested for the action of cranberries in preventing urinary tract infections: acidification of urine, which is thought to lead to bacterial death, degradation of pathogenic microorganisms by antiseptic compounds, and the possibility of interfering with bacterial adhesion to the bladder wall. In 2009, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a statement that cranberry products reduce bacterial adhesion to the lower urinary tract epithelium in vitro.
Studies clearly indicate that cranberry extract is a better preventive and supportive treatment for urinary tract infections because it carries a lower risk of acquiring resistance and side effects associated with long-term use of antimicrobial drugs.

Purple coneflower

Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is one of the plants whose regular use can help improve resistance to infections. Studies have shown that the herb and root of purple coneflower have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Purple coneflower is also valued for its immunostimulating effects, strengthening the body's immune response and calming inflammation.

By supporting the proper functioning of the immune system, it contributes to maintaining the health of the lower urinary tract, which is why it is recommended for recurrent urinary tract and bladder infections.

Common nettle

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a herb belonging to the group of diuretics, which supports the body in the process of urine formation and excretion. Thanks to the content of saponins and flavonoid compounds, nettle leaves have a diuretic effect, which also has a cleansing effect on the entire urinary tract. In the case of recurrent urinary tract infections, it is important to drink plenty of fluids and excrete urine frequently, because it helps to flush pathogenic bacteria from the body.

Black Elderberry

Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) in traditional Polish herbal medicine is one of the best herbs used to increase the body's immunity and fight infections. The active substances contained in the fruit, i.e. polyphenols and anthocyanins, inhibit infections, stimulate the immune system and calm inflammation.

In recent years, numerous studies have shown that elderberry also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Taking black elderberry during periods of increased risk of infection results in a strengthening of the immune system and a reduced risk of infections, including those related to the urinary tract.

Urinary system

In a healthy person, all elements of the urinary tract are free of pathogenic microorganisms. Urinary tract infections occur when pathogenic bacteria enter them. They most often enter through the urethra. Women are more likely to have urinary tract problems, because their urethra is anatomically shorter and microorganisms have a shorter route to travel. Inflammation of the urinary bladder caused by bacteria causes characteristic symptoms such as frequent urination, the presence of cloudiness or blood in the urine, burning during urination, abdominal pain, fever, and unpleasant urine odor.

A bladder infection diagnosed too late and left untreated progresses towards the kidneys and becomes even more harmful and dangerous to our body.

The most common therapeutic approach to urinary tract infections is the use of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. Due to the increasing antibiotic resistance, the world of science and research places great emphasis on effective prevention and use of measures to prevent the development of urinary tract infections.

Prevention should apply to people who are prone to recurrent urinary tract infections. The risk group includes pregnant women, the elderly, people with weakened immunity, and those with diabetes (the presence of this disease significantly increases the risk of bladder infections).

How to prevent urinary tract infections?

  • A properly balanced diet - significantly affects our health and the proper functioning of all systems in the body, including the immune system. In addition, you should not eat cold foods rich in sugar. Warm, easily digestible and easily absorbed meals are recommended, enriched with warming spices: ginger, chili, pepper.
  • Adequate fluid intake – drinking about 2-2.5 liters of water a day increases diuresis and flushes the urinary tract.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing – on cold days it is important to keep your head, feet and urinary tract warm. Do not sit on cold ground.
  • Natural clothing – wear not too tight clothing made from natural fibers, especially underwear.
  • Take care of proper intimate hygiene – pH-neutral fluids are the best solution.
  • Wash and wipe from front to back, which prevents bacteria from moving from the anus to the urethral opening.
  • Use urinary tract disinfectants as a preventive measure, especially if recurrent infections are clearly related to sexual activity.
  • Use natural preparations that prevent the development of infections and support the proper functioning of the urinary tract mucosa.

Plant-based supplements for the urinary system

The advantages of using herbs for the bladder and urinary tract in the prevention or support of treatment of infections are their naturalness and very often the lack of significant side effects.

It is worth reaching for herbs and herbal supplements for the urinary system, which:

  • prevent recurrent urinary tract infections,
  • they lower urine pH thanks to the active substances they contain,
  • they have diuretic properties, thanks to which they cleanse the urinary system,
  • have anti-inflammatory effects,
  • support the body in the fight against bacteria and viruses,
  • support the proper functioning of the immune system, contributing to the health of the lower urinary tract.

It is important to remember that herbs for the urinary system can cause side effects, and the reaction to them results from the individual characteristics of the body. It is worth consulting a doctor before introducing them to your daily diet, especially when taking any medications, as they can interact with herbs, posing a threat to health or even life.
